SGI Europe calls for stronger investment and infrastructure to support Europe’s resilience at the Tripartite Social Summit

On 18 March 2026, SGI Europe participated in the Tripartite Social Summit (TSS), held amid increasing geopolitical uncertainty, economic transformation, and growing pressure on Europe’s energy systems and investment capacity. In the presence of Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, Antonio Costa, President of the European Council, and Nikos Christodoulides, President of the Republic of Cyprus, discussions focused on how to strengthen Europe’s resilience, competitiveness and quality job creation through targeted investment and coordinated policy action.

Speaking in the opening round for his first TSS, Ingbert Liebing, President of SGI Europe, said:

“While Europe cannot control global crises, we can control how resilient we are. Our response to the current turmoil must rely on confidence, consistency and unity. We must maintain a stable and credible framework for the energy transition. The ETS must remain the backbone of Europe’s decarbonisation pathway, providing the market signal needed to drive investment and innovation.”

“The EU must significantly invest in essential infrastructures and SGIs. Closing the investment gap will require private and public investment. The Savings and Investment Union can play an important role in unlocking private capital, but public investment will also remain essential, supported by the European Semester and the next Multiannual Financial Framework.”

Contributing to the opening discussion, Valeria Ronzitti, General Secretary of SGI Europe, added:

“The Freedom to Stay is a question of credibility and of democracy for the European project. If people cannot build a life where they feel at home wherever they are in Europe, then the Single Market is not fully delivering. If entire territories remain underserved and brain-drained, the EU  will not close its competitiveness gap. The Freedom to Stay must therefore be a horizontal enabler to a competitive, cohesive and resilient Europe, at the heart of the One Europe, One Market agenda.”
