SGI Europe: Re-appointment of Valeria Ronzitti as SGI Europe General Secretary

Today [23 June 2026], the General Assembly of SGI Europe has re-appointed Valeria Ronzitti as General Secretary for a 5-year mandate.

During her speech to present the priorities, Ms Ronzitti called for further consolidating SGI Europe’s influence, deepening solidarity among its members, and turning the recognition of services of general interest into concrete European commitments:

“Throughout the experiences and crises of the past 5 years, one lesson has become increasingly clear: Services of general interest are not a peripheral component of the European project. They are one of its foundations.”

“When I began this mandate in 2021, my ambition was for SGI Europe to continue to represent its members effectively, while strengthening our ability to shape European debates rather than merely react to them. Over the past five years, SGI Europe has steadily become a more proactive organisation – proposing ideas and policy solutions, creating political platforms and alliances, reinforcing its role as a European social partner, and consolidating its financial and organisational foundations.”

“If there is one lesson I draw from the last mandate, it is that solidarity is not only a value; it is also a strategy, and it works. In a period marked by fragmentation, uncertainty and competition for political attention, the moments when we acted together have been the moments when we achieved most.”

“The mandate I now ask you to entrust to me has a task that is different again, and in some ways harder: to make what we have built endure, and to turn our influence into concrete results. Amongst others, and building on our internal strength, we can develop together a genuine European Action Plan for Services of General Interest, built from the bottom up on the basis of our members’ own priorities.”

General Secretary of SGI Europe since 2012, Ms Ronzitti’s renewed mandate will run until 2031.
