30 November 2022
On 30 November, the European Commission has presented its proposal for a review of the Package and Waste Packaging legislation.
Representing amongst others SGIs active in the waste management, water and wastewater sectors, SGI Europe calls for putting waste prevention at the top of the EU approach to the circular economy. The approach focused on stronger waste prevention measures put forward in the proposal for a revision of the Packaging and Waste Packaging legislation is therefore a step in the right direction.
“Prevention of waste is a core principle for a truly working circular economy. SGI Europe, therefore, supports the Commission’s ambition to further address all parts of the value chain by targeting the waste packaging industry to prevent waste production. Nevertheless, it remains important to also improve the recyclability of products through better information from producers to consumers and waste facilities, whilst increasing awareness of the public on local recycling alternatives.”
“In times of crisis and transitions, the circular economy can play a crucial role in balancing environmental protection, social cohesion and economic growth. It is of vital importance to acknowledge the potential contribution to economic growth and job creation of investments in sustainable solutions. As an EU social partner, SGI Europe has developed specific knowledge about the economic impact of the circular economy, and can directly contribute to its development.”
Whilst welcoming the focus on waste prevention, SGI Europe highlights the need for increased clarity on biobased packaging products, and for better recognising the role that waste utilities play at the end of the waste streamline.“
