SGI Europe welcomes the re-opening of the debate on the EU economic governance and fiscal rules

Today (19 October 2021), the European Commission presented its communication “The EU economy after COVID-19: implications for economic governance”, relaunching the debate on the EU fiscal governance initially building up on the lessons from the pandemic.

Commenting the communication, Valeria Ronzitti, SGI Europe General Secretary, said:

“Today is the beginning of a long journey and SGI Europe is ready to be an integral part of it. As a new start for the discussions on the EU fiscal rules and economic governance, we call for dully taking into account all the lessons of the pandemic which revealed our structural vulnerabilities.
In this context, we believe that productive investments in high-quality services of general interest should be put on equal footing with the objective of debt consolidation.”

“It is now or never for embracing a new paradigm for the EU fiscal policy and economic governance framework, and SGI Europe looks forward to contribute to an effective and constructive way to build consensus on this crucial issue.”

“We are also confident about the positive approach of the European Commission to this discussion, as highlighted by the willingness and openness of Executive Vice-President Dombrovskis and Commissioner Gentiloni during the press conference launching the consultation today.”
