“The EU now needs a genuinely holistic approach to mental health”, says SGI Europe

On Wednesday 8 June, the European Commission adopted its communication on a comprehensive approach to mental health. This proposal is a new building block for the EU Health Union, and is a first and important step to put forward a transversal approach to mental health issues. It highlights 20 flagship initiatives and €1,23 billion in EU funding from different financial instruments, the Commission will support Member States putting people and their mental health first.

Following the presentation of the proposal, Valeria Ronzitti, SGI Europe General Secretary, commented:

“SGI Europe, with its members active in the care and healthcare sectors and social services, welcomes the comprehensive, holistic and transversal focus put by the European Commission. The COVID-19 pandemic further exacerbated the mental health crisis across the EU, and we welcome the willingness of the European Union to support Member States design and finance initiatives to address this crisis.”

 “The comprehensive approach to mental health must complement already existing strategies, such as the Care strategy, and should, through dedicated new instruments, support Member States in building capacity for the actors on the ground, in the care and healthcare sectors.”

The ongoing social partners’ negotiations for a directive on telework and the right to disconnect is a testimony of the crucial role that employers and workers can play in shaping healthy and safe working environments. It is important for the European Commission to continue supporting us in this endeavour.”
